“A Peace agreement does not mean that you are free from accountability for committing merciless atrocities,” PLF’s and Tigray Government’s V/President Fetlework Gebregziabher said at the International Women’s Day (March 8 ) celebrations in the city of Mekelle. She said it is difficult to talk about the injustice and violence committed against the people of Tigray, especially women, but those who committed these crimes have not been held accountable yet. She also added that despite the peace agreement, there is still unliberated land in Tigray. She said the people in these areas are being oppressed by the army of dictator Isayas Afewoki. Mothers in these areas are becoming more vulnerable, and are also dying in childbirth due to a lack of treatment and medicines. She called for the unity shown in the struggle to be repeated in peaceful and political struggle to overcome all these problems and to repair the damage caused by war and destruction and to create a better and more developed Tigray.
Finally, she said the 17-year struggle has not been properly documented. Now, the generation should learn from the heroism and sacrifices of the women of Tigray in the struggle for their survival and security – and this has to be well documented. The International Women’s Day (March 8 ) was celebrated for the 47th time in Tigray and for the 113th time globally.
