The National Election Board of Ethiopia has announced that it is uncertain whether the TPLF (Tigray People’s Liberation Front) is undertaking the necessary activities to facilitate its general assembly within six months of its special registration. In a statement released on December 31, 2024, on its social media page, the board has urged the TPLF to convene its general meeting.<\/p>\n
According to the statement, the board has no knowledge up until the day it wrote the letter to the TPLF about whether the party was making preparations for a general assembly within six months of its registration. The decree stipulates that a party which has been granted special registration must hold a general meeting within six months of the registration date.<\/p>\n
The board also reminded that the TPLF was granted special registration status on August 9, 2024, under the provisions of Decree No. 1332\/2016, which amended the guidelines on Election Ethics and Evaluation of Political Parties in Ethiopia. The statement also emphasized that the board strongly advises the TPLF to hold its General Assembly within the remaining time frame, as per the instructions provided in the previous communications sent to the party.<\/p>\n
In the letter signed by the Chairman of the Election Board, Melatework Haile, it was mentioned that since the party was specially registered, there is less than two months left until the end of the deadline to be held its General Assembly. The letter also states that if the party fails to fulfill its obligations under the law in time, the board will make appropriate decision based on the law. <\/p>\n
The National Election Board of Ethiopia has also stated that TPLF should held a general assembly attended by board observers within six months from the receipt of the letter and registration certificate stating that the TPLF has been registered under special conditions.<\/p>\n
According to the National Board’s statement the TPLF was specially registered on August 9, 2024. Therefore, the General Assembly is expected to be held until February 10\/2024. The National Board added that “It is expected that the party informs the board of the day of the general assembly 21 days before the general assembly so that the board can monitor the activities related to the preparation of the general assembly.”<\/p>\n
“However, as of the date of writing this letter, the board does not know whether the party is taking action to hold a general meeting within six months of its registration,” The National board explained.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, it is remembered that the TPLF was held its general assembly on August 13, 2024, and expelled 16 senior leaders including Getachew Reda for not participating in the assembly. Following this, The TPLF has been demanding to return its position for those who are in the power in the interim Administration in the name of TPLF <\/p>\n
It is also recalled that the Ethiopian National Election Board at the time stated that the assembly was held aside from the decision of the TPLF Central Control Commission, and its ‘legality’ was questioned.<\/p>\n
It is remembered that recently, the TPLF lead by Debretsion Gebremichiel accused the leaders of the interim administration, led by Getachew Reda by “national treason”. In response Getachew Reda has also repeatedly accused TPLF of carrying out a “coup d’\u00e9tat over the civil administration “.<\/p>\n\n
