\u2014 The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of the Republic of Somaliland announced its support for U.S. military action in Venezuela, which Washington has described as \u201cproportionate international action\u201d aimed at restoring constitutional order, democratic legitimacy, and the rule of law.<\/p>\n
In a statement issued yesterday, the ministry said Somaliland recognizes the efforts of the United States in coordination with regional and multilateral partners. Such engagement, it noted, could help resolve Venezuela\u2019s long-standing political and humanitarian crisis.<\/p>\n
The statement added that the Somaliland government believes responsible U.S.-led engagement, carried out in cooperation with regional and multilateral partners, can alleviate humanitarian suffering, counter transnational criminal networks, and support a peaceful Venezuelan-led transition based on sovereignty, accountability, responsibility, and respect for human rights.<\/p>\n
The ministry stressed that any transition must be grounded in respect for national sovereignty, accountability, and human rights. It added that Somaliland\u2019s position is based on international principles and considerations of common security.<\/p>\n
Somaliland\u2019s comments come amid a range of international responses to recent developments in Venezuela. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said his country supports the \u201cstrong action\u201d taken by the United States.<\/p>\n
\u201cI would like to express my support for the determination and strong action taken by the United States to establish freedom and justice in that part of the world,\u201d Netanyahu said during a cabinet meeting.<\/p>\n
His remarks followed Washington\u2019s recent military action against Venezuelan President Nicol\u00e1s Maduro, further fueling debate over international intervention in Venezuela\u2019s political crisis.<\/p>\n
Venezuela has previously opposed Israel\u2019s recognition of Somaliland through its embassy in Kenya, reaffirming its support for Somalia\u2019s territorial integrity.<\/p>\n
\u201cVenezuela firmly opposes any unilateral action that seeks to recognize separatist entities in the territory of Somalia,\u201d the embassy said in a statement posted on its official social media pages. It added that Venezuela \u201creaffirms its full and firm recognition of the sovereignty and internationally recognized territorial integrity of the Federal Republic of Somalia.\u201d<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, the U.S. military intervention in Venezuela, which took place on Saturday and resulted in the ousting of President Nicol\u00e1s Maduro, who was subsequently taken to the United States, is set to be discussed today by the United Nations Security Council.<\/p>\n
The council will examine whether the intervention violates international law. Key members, including Russia and China, have opposed the U.S. move, while several Western allies have condemned it as a breach of international norms.<\/p>\n
The UN secretary-general warned that the U.S. action \u201csets a dangerous precedent\u201d for the world, according to his spokesman on Saturday.<\/p>\n\n
