In Amhara Region, North Gojam Zone, teachers who have not been paid their salaries for the past 2 months said that they are in a worse situation. The number of teachers will be more than 1,000. These teachers who teach in 52 1st and 2nd level schools in the district stated that they are unable to support their families, including money sent to their children who are studying at universities, as they are only able to survive on their monthly salary.
Konji Kolella’s district administrator, Getachew Degefaw admitted that this is a real problem. He explained that it was caused by the security problem in the area when accountants refused to enter the office and work. Even though he didn’t mentioned when the issue will be resolved, he at least gave a hope that they are working on it.
Similar questions have been raised from Tigray as well. School Teachers in Tigary have been asking for a 12 month unpaid salary from 2014 E.C budget year and a 5 months unpaid salary from 2015 as well. The government has given them a deaf ear and protests have been going on ever since.
