According to the instructions provided by the airline to facilitate operations amid the issues in Eritrea, the airline has suspended flights to Asmara starting September 3, 2024.
In recent years, following the establishment of relations between Ethiopia and Eritrea, the airline began operating flights to Eritrea, marking the first commercial flight between the two countries in 20 years. Although this should have been a step towards enhancing the relationship between the two countries and fostering economic and social ties, it ultimately aimed at supporting military actions against Tigray.
Unfortunately, since the peace agreement was reached, the Genocidal War in Tigray erupted, with all Ethiopian institutions participating on the side of the government. An investigative report by CNN revealed that Ethiopian Airlines played a role in transporting soldiers and weapons from Addis Ababa to Asmara.
Even after the war ended with the Pretoria Agreement, relations between the two countries have not improved. Recently, following the Ethiopian Prime Minister’s decision to lift the maritime agenda, the two countries, which have been engaged in a heated exchange of statements, announced that Ethiopian Airlines has officially stopped flights to Eritrea.
Meanwhile, Eritrea still controlled Tigray regional state’s territories and committing crime against humanity.
