The Holy Synod of Orthodox Tigray stated that both leaders have promised to meet and resolve their differences peacefully. It is known that the face-to-face discussion took half a day. The religious leaders said, “According to our call to solve their problems through dialogue, they met and informed us that they will resolve their issues through political and legal procedures.” Both leaders, along with their representatives Getachew Reda and Debretsion G/Michael (Dr.), who were present at the face-to-face meeting, did not give any statement to the media.
A few days ago, Ato Getachew Reda and Dr. Debretsion Gebremichael had a meeting, which became a topic of discussion after Ato Getachew posted a photo of the two together on his social media page.
One of the religious leaders, His Holiness Abune Kirlos, told Dedebit Media that Tigray is currently facing a severe humanitarian crisis. The conflict ignited by political leaders has caused concern among the people of Tigray. and efforts to recover from the damage caused by the genocidal war have been hindered by the lack of implementation of the Pretoria Agreement, which aims to repatriate those displaced by the conflict. He further stated that our mediation efforts to peacefully resolve their differences were successful, and they have pledged to settle their disputes amicably.
Furthermore, His Holiness Abuna Markos said, during the recent General Assembly of the Synod, responded to a request from the interim administration by urging religious leaders to assist in coordinating the populace to gather crops following unexpected rainfall. He relayed that the administration reported an 80% unemployment rate among the youth. Furthermore, His Holiness noted that the leaders affirmed there were no discrepancies on fundamental matters such as the Pretoria Agreement’s implementation, the repatriation of displaced individuals, and expressed that their mediation efforts were fruitful in resolving differences amicably.
The religious leaders have urged everyone to seek peaceful and political resolutions for their differences and address the dire situations in Tigray, as per their commitment.
