Today, the Tigray Genocide Inquiry Commission is holding a conference to mark the fourth anniversary of the Tigray Genocide.

Assistant Professor Yemane Zeray, Commissioner of the Tigray Genocide Inquiry Commission, spoke at the conference about the hundreds of thousands of people who tragically lost their lives during the genocide. He highlighted the brutalities suffered by innocent civilians, including pregnant women whose unborn children were targeted, and individuals who faced starvation and lack of medical care. He emphasized the importance of honoring those who sacrificed their lives as freedom fighters and expressed the need for acknowledgment, healing, and accountability.

Professor Zeray outlined three key objectives shared by those seeking justice for the victims of the Tigray Genocide. Firstly, to raise awareness of the atrocities committed and hold perpetrators accountable. Secondly, to address the psychological, social, and economic challenges faced by survivors through rehabilitation and reconstruction efforts. And thirdly, to prevent such atrocities from happening again by learning from history and ensuring a system of accountability for future generations.

The anniversary of the Tigray Genocide, the horrific genocide that took place four years ago on November 4, 2020, will be commemorated today under the theme “Dignity for Life and Ensuring Justice.” This event serves as a reminder of the importance of preserving history, learning from past mistakes, and working towards a better future for all.
