Tigray Interim Administration President Getachew Reda has called on the international community to help ensure the proper implementation of the Pretoria Agreement and ensure justice and lasting peace.
In an interview with the Italian daily newspaper Avvenire.it, President Getachew stated that although the conflict in Tigray has ceased, the populace continues to confront significant challenges. More than a million displaced individuals are living in extremely difficult conditions, unable to return to their homes and reclaim their lands, particularly in western Tigray. The main issues include health, education, and food security. The civil war has significantly impacted agriculture and other economic activities, leaving a large portion of the Tigrayan population reliant on humanitarian aid. Hospitals, schools, and public facilities have been targeted, damaged, or destroyed, and there is much work to be done to rebuild and ensure essential services.
President Getachew Reda mentioned that Eritrean troops are present in Tigray, despite the Pretoria Agreement requiring the withdrawal of foreign soldiers. He expressed a desire for peace with Eritrea, emphasizing the importance of an international mechanism to deliver justice. He stressed the need to hold accountable those responsible for violence against civilians and women. He suggested the creation of an international commission in light of the involvement of external forces in Tigray.
Addressing the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Tigray, where over a million displaced people are unable to return home, Getachew highlighted the devastating effects on agriculture and infrastructure. He recognized the progress in restoring services and noted the collaboration with Addis Ababa, yet he emphasized that it remains insufficient.
Getachew commended Italy’s support and the work being done by Cuamm in Tigray, from rebuilding hospitals to providing medical resources. He called for increased international assistance to rebuild the region and promote lasting peace. Emphasizing the importance of establishing a foundation for dialogue and reconciliation, he stated, “We must create a foundation for dialogue and reconciliation.”
