The earthquakes have been occurring frequently at night, with tremors felt as far as Addis Ababa. More than 13 earthquakes have been recorded in Ethiopia within the last 24 hours, according to the American Geological Survey.
The earthquakes were between 4.4 and 4.8 magnitude on the Richter scale, as reported by the center. The American Geological Survey noted that over eight earthquakes ranging from 4.5 to 4.7 magnitude have taken place in Awash and Methara regions since yesterday.
During last night’s earthquakes, a magnitude of 4.5 on the Richter scale was recorded in the Abomsa area at 5:48 p.m. Another earthquake with a magnitude of 4.8 struck at 7:13 p.m.
In addition, a 4.7 magnitude earthquake occurred at 8:30 p.m. in the Sire area of northeastern Ethiopia, while a 4.5 magnitude earthquake hit the Awash area at 10:38 p.m.
Preliminary data indicates that the earthquakes happened at depths ranging from 3.4 to 10.1 kilometers underground. The tremors were reportedly felt from the epicenters to Addis Ababa and beyond.
Earthquakes have been occurring frequently in Ethiopia since last September. Professor Atalay Ayele, an earthquake researcher and lecturer at Addis Ababa University’s Institute of Geophysics, Space Science and Astronomy, told the Ethiopian Broadcasting Corporation (EBC) that an earthquake with a magnitude of 5 on the Richter scale recently occurred in the Funtale mountain area, and the tremors were felt as far as Addis Ababa.
The researcher stated, “We have confirmed from residents that some houses and schools are in danger of cracking in the Methara area and Sabure city due to the recent earthquake.” He added that there have been no reports of damage in Addis Ababa city yet.
He mentioned that after an earthquake starts, it can last from weeks to 6 months. He also stated that the earthquake in Ethiopia is expected to last for months.
