US President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s talks at the White House ended without an agreement. Zelensky had gone to the White House to sign an agreement with the United States regarding precious minerals. However, the meeting led to an argument and a verbal altercation, resulting in a disagreement.
The talks broke off after President Zelensky had a heated discussion with President Trump and Vice President JD Vance. During their stay in the Oval Office, Trump accused Zelensky of “disrespectful behavior.”
During the speech, Trump said to Zelensky, “You are gambling with millions of lives and World War 3.” Although Zelensky insisted on guarantees to sign a peace agreement, Trump responded, “You don’t have the power and authority to negotiate. Your only option is to sign the agreement; otherwise, America will leave.”
In their rebuke-filled conversation, Trump accused Zelensky of “gambling with World War III” and being “ungrateful” for US military and political support for Ukraine. Zelensky, on his part, argued that he should not facilitate an agreement with Russian President Vladimir Putin. Trump, however, insisted that they must do whatever it takes to reach a peace agreement.
Russia currently controls 20 percent of Ukraine following its invasion in 2022. President Trump has previously blamed Zelensky for starting the war, stating that he “could have reached a deal earlier.”
Following this, the two leaders met at the White House on Friday to reach an agreement that would allow the US access to Ukraine’s natural gas, oil, and rare minerals. A day before their talks, Trump appeared to soften, saying he had “great respect” for the Ukrainian leader. However, the discussion became heated after Vice President Vance, who was with Trump, ordered Zelensky to end the war through diplomacy.
“What kind of diplomacy?” Zelensky asked, referring to the 2019 European ceasefire agreement. The ceasefire agreement was reached three years before Russia invaded Ukraine, concerning the Ukrainian separatist forces it had been supporting.
The US vice president slammed Zelensky in front of the media, calling him “disrespectful.” As the conversation grew more heated, Trump and his deputy criticized Zelensky for not being thankful to the US for three years of support and stated that Zelensky was not in a position to dictate terms to the US.
After this conversation, Trump wrote on his social media platform, Truth Social, that “He disrespected the United States of America in its cherished Oval Office.” He added, “I understand that President Zelensky is not ready for peace if America is involved. He feels that our participation in the negotiations will benefit him. I don’t want benefits. I want peace.”
President Trump told Zelensky that “He can come back when he is ready for peace.” Following this, President Zelensky left the White House, and the press conference that the two leaders were going to hold was canceled.
