The President of the Tigray Region Interim Administration, Getachew Reda, has announced the temporary suspension of three generals serving as commanders of Tigray army. However, the Regional Peace and Security Office has criticized the decision, claiming it did not adhere to institutional procedures and laws.
President Getachew Reda’s letter, dated March 10, 2025, addresses the suspension of three high-ranking generals—Major General Yohannes W/Georgis, Major General Masho Beyene, and Brigadier General Mgbey Haile. The letter accuses them of actions that have destabilized the region, caused internal conflicts among security forces, and led to widespread chaos.
In response to the President’s decision, the Tigray Region Peace and Security Bureau issued a statement on March 11, 2025, rejecting the suspensions. Titled “Enough of Being a Lawyer for Criminals,” the statement claimed that the suspensions were imposed because actions had been taken against alleged criminals. The bureau described the decision as “non-compliant with institutional procedures and laws” and criticized it as a personal action that undermines efforts to combat crime.
The Peace and Security Bureau of the Tigray Region has also accused the president of using his power to reverse progress in preventing and controlling crime and criminals,” the bureau stated. It further assured the public that “the work of enforcing the law and the constitution will continue.”
Meanwhile, the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) also condemned the President’s decision, labeling it illegal. In a strongly worded statement, the TPLF accused Getachew Reda of conspiring to dismantle the Tigray Army and referred to him as the “former president.” The TPLF argued that the suspensions lacked proper authority and were unenforceable.
“The conspiracy to destroy the Tigray Army has reached a high and dangerous level,” the TPLF stated, urging the reversal of the decision.
