Press Release; from Salsay Weyane Tigray
Urgent Call to Address Escalating Threats to Peace in Tigray
Salsay Weyane Tigray expresses its grave concern regarding the escalating threats to the fragile peace in the Horn of Africa, which are casting a dark cloud of renewed conflict over the region. This precarious situation poses an immediate and serious concern to the people of Tigray.
The threat has recently materialized in the form of a blockade preventing essential goods from reaching Tigray. The Government of Ethiopia has implemented this measure under the guise of combating illegal cross-border smuggling. However, Salsay Weyane Tigray views this action as a severe impediment to the peace process and a direct threat to the well-being of our people. We unequivocally demand an immediate halt to such measures.
We also urgently appeal to all stakeholders to refrain from using the interests and human rights of the people of Tigray as political leverage. The fundamental rights and interests of the people of Tigray should never be instrumentalized in political negotiations or power struggles.
A truly durable solution to the ongoing instability hinges on the federal government’s commitment to fulfilling its obligations. This includes ensuring the complete and unconditional withdrawal of all foreign forces from Tigray’s administrative territories. Furthermore, the federal government must fully execute its constitutional and legal mandates in areas such as border patrol and other responsibilities, ensuring stability and security.
Therefore, we implore all stakeholders to immediately acknowledge and address this hostile development. Collaborative efforts are crucial to prevent further escalation of tensions and to sustain the spirit and integrity of the Cessation of Hostilities Agreement (CoHA). The peace and stability of Tigray and the broader region depend on decisive action and genuine commitment from all parties involved.
