Two Mpox Cases Confirmed in Amhara Region-Ethiopia

The Amhara Regional Public Health Institute has confirmed two cases of monkeypox (Mpox) in the towns of Metema and Bahir Dar.

In a press conference on June 12, 2025, the Institute’s Director General, Ato Belay Bezabih, announced that one case was identified in Metema and another in Bahir Dar. Both patients received appropriate treatment and are recovering.

Bezabih emphasized that Mpox is a treatable disease if proper precautions are followed. He urged the public to prioritize personal hygiene and take necessary preventive measures to protect themselves, according to information obtained from ETV.

According to the Ministry of Health’s daily report, compiled in collaboration with the Ethiopian Public Health Institute, Ethiopia had recorded 18 confirmed Mpox cases as of June 11, 2025.

The report indicated that one death has been recorded so far, while 15 individuals remain in quarantine. The Ministry further noted that two patients have recovered, and a total of 102 individuals have been tested nationwide since the outbreak.

Meanwhile, the European Commission’s Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid Coordination Office reported that Mpox testing in Ethiopia is currently being conducted in three cities: Addis Ababa, Adama, and Hawassa
