The opposition political party operating in the Tigray region, Salsay Weyane Tigray (SaWeT), has issued a statement holding the federal government accountable for what it describes as a constitutional and humanitarian obligation: the return of internally displaced persons (IDPs) and refugees.

According to the statement, SaWeT criticized the government for characterizing its efforts as merely “helping” with the return process, rather than fulfilling its direct responsibility as mandated by the constitution and the Cessation of Hostilities Agreement (CoHA).

The party denounced this framing as “lip service,” arguing that it demonstrates a lack of urgency and commitment. They emphasized the need for concrete measures, including the removal of “illegal administrations” and the withdrawal of all armed forces from occupied areas.

Salsay Weyane Tigray asserted that while cooperation from other actors, such as the TPLF, could be constructive, it should not be seen as a prerequisite for government action.

The party concluded its statement by calling on all stakeholders to the CoHA to apply pressure on relevant parties to ensure the prompt and safe return of displaced individuals.
