The President of Somaliland, Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi (Irro), has returned home following a three-day official visit to Ethiopia. However, no formal statement has yet been issued by Ethiopian authorities regarding the visit.
According to the Somaliland Presidency, the trip was described as “successful.” During his stay in Addis Ababa from October 14 to 16, President Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi (Irro) met with Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed and other senior government officials.
This marked President Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi (Irro)’s first official visit to Ethiopia since taking office in November 2024. A statement from his office said the visit aimed to “further strengthen the long-standing friendship, cooperation, and mutual ties” between Somaliland and Ethiopia. It also emphasized the “shared commitment of Somaliland and Ethiopia to promote peace, stability, and sustainable development in the Horn of Africa region.”
As of this writing, neither the Ethiopian Ministry of Foreign Affairs nor the Prime Minister’s Office has released any official statement or visual documentation regarding the meetings or outcomes of the visit.
Nonetheless, in a brief video shared by the Somaliland Presidency alongside the official statement, President Irro stated that he held “high-level and fruitful discussions” with Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed and other Ethiopian officials during his time in Addis Ababa.
Meanwhile, it is worth noting that under the Ankara Agreement—brokered by Turkey—Ethiopia reaffirmed its commitment to respect Somalia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. Diplomatic relations between Ethiopia and Somalia have reportedly improved since the signing of the agreement.
