Salsay Weyane Tigray, a prominent opposition party operating in the Tigray region, has issued a statement expressing deep sorrow over recent fatal hyena attacks targeting children in Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camps in Mekelle.
The party described the incidents as “tragic casualties” and attributed them to the prolonged instability and deteriorating living conditions in the camps. According to the statement, inadequate shelter and lack of security have left displaced Tigrayans—especially children—highly vulnerable to such threats.
“These horrific incidents are a direct consequence of the protracted and precarious conditions,” the statement read, calling for immediate action from both local and international stakeholders.
Salsay Weyane Tigray urged authorities to prioritize a sustainable resolution to the crisis, emphasizing the need for the safe and swift return of IDPs to their homes. The party also demanded the withdrawal of all hostile forces from the region to ensure long-term stability.
In a pointed appeal to the Federal Government, the party criticized what it described as “continuous indifference” toward the suffering of Tigrayans. It called on federal authorities to uphold their obligations under the Agreement for Lasting Peace through a Permanent Cessation of Hostilities (CoHA) and the Ethiopian Constitution.
The statement adds to growing concerns about the humanitarian situation in Tigray, where thousands remain displaced amid fragile security and limited access to basic service.
