Salsay Weyane Tigray Urges Restoration of Constitutional Order Ahead of Elections.
The Salsay Weyane Tigray (SaWeT) party has issued a statement emphasizing that the restoration of constitutional order in the Tigray region is a prerequisite for holding free and fair elections.
In its press release, the party underscored that Tigray’s autonomous statehood is a “non-derogable right safeguarded by the FDRE Constitution,” regardless of whether the region is governed by an interim administration or an elected body.
Salsay Weyane Tigray criticized what it described as the government’s focus on elections while failing to address fundamental obligations. These include the withdrawal of occupying forces from Western Tigray and ensuring the safe, dignified, and voluntary return of displaced persons and refugees.
“While the people of Tigray aspire to elect their leaders in accordance with the national election schedule, this goal cannot be realized unless and until the Government of Ethiopia ceases its continued violations of Tigray’s constitutional status,” the statement read.
The party called on the federal government to meet minimum obligations necessary to create enabling conditions for the upcoming general election. It also urged all stakeholders, particularly Tigrayan political actors, to play a constructive and responsible role in the process.
