Salsay Weyane Tigray Warns of Worsening Famine in IDP Camps.

The political party Salsay Weyane Tigray has issued a press release yesterday December 29, sharply criticizing the Ethiopian government for what it describes as deliberate obstruction of humanitarian efforts in the region. The party warns that famine among internally displaced persons (IDPs) in Tigray is worsening, with more than 146 camps sheltering thousands of vulnerable people.

According to the statement, the humanitarian response remains “far from adequate,” with authorities accused of exacerbating the crisis rather than facilitating aid. The party alleges that Federal government actions have actively hindered private benefactors attempting to deliver relief.

One recent incident highlighted in the release involves the confiscation of funds and relief items mobilized by TikTok users intended for victims of severe hunger at the Hitsats IDP center. Salsay Weyane Tigray described the move as evidence of a “dangerous policy of continuing to use man-made famine as a weapon against civilians.”

The party reiterated its longstanding claim that the crisis is not accidental but part of a “deliberate policy of extermination by attrition.” It rejected government justifications for preventing IDPs from returning to their homes, arguing that no credible reasons exist. Instead, the party insists that dismantling unlawful structures and removing settlers are necessary steps to ensure safe return of displaced Tigrayans.

In its appeal, Salsay Weyane Tigray called on the government to cease actions that perpetuate displacement and urged humanitarian organizations and human rights defenders to treat the crisis with the urgency it demands.

“Our people are perishing as a result of deliberate policy,” the statement read. “The government bears primary responsibility for the ongoing and unabated suffering.”
