TPLF Chairman Urges African Union to Intensify Dialogue Efforts

The Chairman of the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF), Dr. Debretsion Gebremichiel, has written to African Union Commission Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, reaffirming the party’s commitment to peace and dialogue in Ethiopia.

In the letter, Dr. Debretsion welcomed the African Union’s recent statement calling for restraint and dialogue in response to developments in the Tigray region. He praised the AU’s “principled engagement in support of peace and stability” and emphasized that dialogue remains the only viable and sustainable path to resolving outstanding issues between Tigray and the Federal Government of Ethiopia.

The TPLF leader underscored the importance of adhering to the Pretoria Permanent Cessation of Hostilities Agreement (COHA), signed in 2022, which ended two years of devastating war in Ethiopia’s Tigray region. He affirmed the party’s readiness to engage constructively in any AU-facilitated initiative, including through the African Union High-Level Panel on Ethiopia, with the aim of advancing peace, confidence-building, and reconciliation.

Dr. Debretsion stressed that “timely, sustained, and proactive facilitation” is essential to preserve the gains achieved since the signing of the COHA. He expressed hope that renewed AU involvement would help generate momentum to overcome the current developments.

“The TPLF stands ready to participate in a genuine, inclusive, and results-oriented dialogue,” the letter stated, highlighting the party’s enduring commitment to peace and stability.
