Salsay Weyane Tigray Warns Against Territorial Reassignment in Tigray

Salsay Weyane Tigray has issued a strong condemnation of a recent decision by Ethiopia’s House of Federation, warning that it could deepen instability and fuel renewed conflict in the region.

In a statement released today, the party accused the federal government of failing to uphold its constitutional duty to restore lawful administration in Tigray. The group highlighted the plight of millions of displaced Tigrayans who were forcibly uprooted from Western Tigray, arguing that the new ruling undermines their right to return.

According to the press release, the House of Federation’s move—linked to the National Election Board of Ethiopia’s announcement—effectively removes Western, Tselemti, and parts of southern Tigray from the authority of the Tigrayan administration. The party described this as a “grave and deliberate escalation” that entrenches displacement and institutionalizes instability.

Salsay Weyane Tigray further stated that the government has pursued measures to alter the demographic composition of the area, including the establishment of unlawful civil and security structures and the arming of irregular groups known as the “Tekeze Guards.” These actions, the party claimed, are designed to block the return of displaced persons and refugees.

The statement characterized the decision not as a neutral administrative act but as a calculated political maneuver intended to provoke confrontation between Tigrayans and Amharas. “By formalizing territorial exclusion under conditions of occupation and displacement, the federal authorities are intentionally fueling inter-communal tension,” the party asserted.

The party called on the international community—including the African Union, the United States, the European Union, and other regional and global actors—to urgently engage with the Ethiopian government. Without such intervention, it warned, the region risks being plunged into another cycle of devastating conflict and instability.
