Education in Tigray at Risk as Teachers Go Unpaid, Says Salsay Weyane
The political party Salsay Weyane Tigray has issued a statement yesterday March 30, 2026, criticizing the Ethiopian federal government for withholding basic social services and subsidies from the Tigray region.
According to the party, the suspension of funding has left hundreds of thousands of civil servants without pay, disrupting essential services. Education has been particularly affected, with teachers across much of the region reportedly going unpaid, leading to widespread school closures and jeopardizing the future of millions of students.
The party described the practice of using public goods as tools of political negotiation as “troubling” and a violation of fundamental human rights. In its statement, Salsay Weyane Tigray urged the federal government to immediately reverse course and take urgent steps to resolve what it called a deepening crisis.
The press release underscores growing tensions between regional authorities in Tigray and the central government, highlighting the humanitarian and social consequences of political disputes.
