Egypt Rejects Attempts to Form Parallel Government in Sudan, Reaffirms Support for National Institutions
Egypt has rejected any attempts to establish a parallel government in Sudan, stressing the need to uphold the country’s unity and territorial integrity, Ahram Online reported.
The position was conveyed during talks in Cairo between Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelati and Pekka Haavisto, the UN Secretary‑General’s Special Envoy to Sudan. According to the report, Abdelati reaffirmed Cairo’s support for Sudan’s national institutions and emphasized that efforts to resolve the conflict must prioritize strengthening state structures and advancing a Sudanese‑led political process.
Abdelati underscored the importance of preserving Sudan’s sovereignty, warned against external interference that could prolong the conflict, and reiterated Egypt’s firm opposition to the creation of rival administrations.
The minister also called for a humanitarian truce as a step toward a comprehensive ceasefire, aimed at facilitating aid delivery and easing civilian suffering. He condemned attacks on civilians as violations of international humanitarian law and stressed the need to protect critical infrastructure.
Abdelati added that Egypt is actively engaged in diplomatic efforts at both regional and international levels—including through the African Union Peace and Security Council—to help de‑escalate tensions and revive an inclusive political process.
Haavisto, for his part, said his recent visits to Khartoum and Port Sudan focused on assessing the humanitarian situation and exploring ways to reduce tensions. He highlighted the importance of continued cooperation with Egypt to support efforts toward a political settlement.
