Sudanese Army says it Retakes strategic Town in West Darfur
– The Sudanese army said on Monday it ha recaptured the strategic town of Kulbus near the Chadian border, in what it described as its biggest military success in West Darfur since the fall of El-Fasher to the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) last year.
The RSF, which has been fighting Sudan’s regular army for more than three years, seized control of most of the Darfur region after capturing El-Fasher.
Meanwhile, the Joint Force – an alliance of government troops and allied armed groups – has maintained positions along parts of the Chadian frontier. Kulbus lies between Al-Tina, a border town in North Darfur held by government forces, and El-Geneina, the capital of West Darfur, which remains under RSF control.
Kulbus, a locality in West Darfur situated about 130 km northwest of El-Geneina and less than 50 km from the Chadian frontier, lies between Al-Tina in North Darfur and El-Geneina, making it a strategic flashpoint in the conflict between Sudan’s army and the RSF.
In a statement late on Monday, the coalition said its fighters had taken full control of Kulbus after what it called a “decisive” battle. It claimed to have inflicted heavy casualties and material losses on the RSF, capturing military vehicles and weapons. The declaration could not be independently verified, and the RSF has yet to comment.
Fighting has intensified in recent months along the borders of North and West Darfur, as Sudan’s army seeks to secure a strategic corridor to Chad, which it accuses of covertly supporting the RSF.
