Salsay Weyane Tigray Issues Urgent Call to Prevent Renewed War

Opposition party Salsay Weyane Tigray has sounded a stark warning to the international community, urging immediate and decisive intervention to avert what it describes as an impending catastrophic war in Ethiopia and the wider Horn of Africa.

In a strongly worded appeal addressed to democratic governments, global organizations, embassies, and international peace and security bodies, the party said the “drums of war are beating once again” between the Federal Government, the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF), and other internal and regional actors. Without heavy diplomatic pressure, it warned, the fragile peace could collapse into a conflict with devastating humanitarian and geopolitical consequences.

Warning of Regional Collapse
The statement emphasized that renewed war would not remain confined to Ethiopia. Instead, it could destabilize the Horn of Africa, trigger state collapses, and unleash unprecedented waves of mass migration. The group cautioned that extremist organizations could exploit the resulting security vacuum, while the strategic Red Sea corridor risked being drawn into turmoil.

Salsay Weyane Tigray argued that the conflict could spill into the Middle East, disrupt global maritime trade routes, and transform East Africa into a proxy battleground where external powers test modern weaponry “at the expense of millions of innocent civilian lives.”

Humanitarian Imperatives
The party highlighted unresolved grievances at the heart of the crisis: constitutional rights of the Tigrayan people, the status of occupied territories, the plight of hundreds of thousands of refugees, and the deprivation of essential services. These issues, it said, must be addressed through peaceful dialogue and adherence to constitutional frameworks, not used as leverage for war.

The call demanded that the Ethiopian government guarantee the safe return of internally displaced persons to their homes, restore basic services and budgetary allocations to Tigray, and enforce constitutional order. “The cost of inaction is too high,” the statement warned, stressing that the scars of the recent war remain fresh and that preventable suffering continues.

Appeal for International Action
Salsay Weyane Tigray urged the international community to apply maximum diplomatic pressure on both the federal authorities and TPLF leadership to halt military mobilizations and inflammatory rhetoric. It also called for sanctions and isolation of political factions and regional actors accused of instigating or funding conflict.

The party insisted that humanitarian and legal questions must be resolved unconditionally as prerequisites for peace. It pressed global powers to use every diplomatic, political, and economic tool available to force all parties to the negotiation table before “the first shot is fired.”

The statement concluded with a stark warning: time is running out. Unless urgent steps are taken, Ethiopia risks sliding back into war, with consequences that could reverberate across continents. “Act now to save millions of lives and preserve regional peace and stability,” the party urged.
