The TPLF’s statement regarding the interim administration and its cabinet resolution.
The Pretoria Agreement was signed after the Tigray people made significant sacrifices in the fight against the genocidal war. Although the agreement was intended to address urgent issues faced by the people of Tigray, fundamental concerns related to their existence, security, rights, and national interests have yet to be resolved.
The Tigray Interim Administration has away from implementing the Pretoria Agreement, instead focusing on consolidating power. The administration issued a statement on September 22, 2024 which aimed to centralize power within the administration.
The TPLF has responded by clarifying its position on the statement issued by the Tigray Interim Administration. The TPLF emphasized that attempts to portray the problems in Tigray are only comes from the TPLF are unacceptable. The party has been engaged in a year-long political struggle to address internal problems. The internal political struggle has involved its members and the people of Tigray, and the problems were evaluated and solutions identified during the congress.
Furthermore, the TPLF emphasizes that the Interim Administration is tasked with specific responsibilities until the people of Tigray elect a government. However, the interim administration is overstepping its bounds by attempting systemic changes and engaging in political cleansing in Tigray, which goes against the wishes of the people.
The interim administration should not have increased powers beyond executing the outcomes of the Pretoria Agreement and providing administrative services. It should not attempt to transform into a national government or take command of the army. under the current structure, the interim administration is under to the federal government. Placing the Tigray Army under the interim administration could potentially expose it to dangerous situations, so this is subordinating the army to the federal government.
The Tigray Army should have a role within the interim administration but not be merged under a singular executive body created by various entities.
The TPLF further stated, The Tigray army is a force committed to ensuring the peaceful and political struggle of the people of Tigray, and it is expected to reintegrate into civilian life through the DDR process. whereas it is not a governmental body that will operate under the interim administration or take on tasks as a government employee.
The Tigray Army’s role should align with the terms of the Pretoria Agreement. Any attempts to interfere with the army’s functions, jeopardize its missions, or subject it to external influences without proper oversight are irresponsible. The interim administration’s move to assert control over the army is unacceptable. The army should only maintain administrative ties with the interim Administration until DDR processes are completed as per the Pretoria Agreement. The army’s organization and missions should reflect national interests and require inclusive participation.
Lastly, the cabinet does not have the legal or political authority to unilaterally decide that it will lead the people-built resistance force which is Tigray army outside of its designated mission. The TPLF has announced plans to take action to address the fundamental issues within the interim administration.
