Reports indicate that 60 percent of students in the Tigray region have not resumed their schooling.
The report from the Tigray Regional Education Office, dated Thursday, October 3, 2024, states that 106 schools are presently serving as shelters for displaced individuals, posing significant challenges to the educational system.
For the 2017 E.C school year, it was anticipated that 2.5 million students would enroll. Yet, to date, only 40 percent of these students, amounting to less than one million, have actually registered.
The low enrollment rate can be attributed to displacement, a disinterest in education, and insufficient educational infrastructure and resources, according to the office. Radai Gebregziabher, the Deputy Head of the Tigray Education Bureau, has raised alarms over the issue. He pointed out that although 40 percent of students are registered, less than 20 percent are actually attending school.
Redai Gebregziabher highlighted that 80 percent of the students anticipated to return have not resumed their education. The ongoing post-war crisis has led many to lose interest in academic pursuits, shifting their focus to securing employment for self-support, he noted.
