Tigray Regional Education Bureau calls for over $5.65 billion to rebuild education system after genocidal war.

The Tigray Regional Education Bureau has announced that over $5.65 billion is needed to completely restore the region’s education system. This statement was made at an education mobilization forum in Abergele Yechla woreda, which took place on October 5th and 6th.
Dr. Kiros Guesh, leader of the Tigray Regional Education Bureau, underscored the severe destruction inflicted on schools by the genocidal war against Tigray. He pointed out the profound sacrifices of the educational community, which include heinous killings, forced displacements, and numerous other adversities.
Hagos Hadera, the Chief Administrator of Abergele Yechla Woreda, has highlighted the critical need for governmental assistance in reconstructing the educational facilities within the region. He stressed the necessity of finalizing the registration process by October 20th, ensuring the involvement of both school authorities and representatives of the parents.
Memhir Giziawi Teklay, head of the Abergele Yechla Woreda Education Office, disclosed that during the 2016 E.C academic year, 1,340 students, including 555 women, left school for various reasons. Additionally, he noted that more than 34 million birr was allocated to construct deep and medium wells, supplying drinking water to 16 schools impacted by the conflict.
The director mentioned that the primary challenges encompass 17 months of unpaid salaries, a shortage of staff, a deficiency in educational resources, and an insufficient number of schools.
