Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has alleged that certain embassies are involved in the looting of Ethiopian resources and participation in black-market activities.
In today’s session of the House of People’s Representatives—4th year term, 3rd regular meeting—Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed accused certain embassies of participating in the foreign currency black market.
“There are some embassies that are robbing Ethiopia’s resources and engaging in foreign currency transactions,” stated Abiy.
“There are embassies involved in black market activities, but we are tolerating them to prevent any issues,” said Abiy Ahmed. “We expect embassies to maintain a healthy relationship,” he added.
The Prime Minister assured that embassies engaging in such practices would be closely monitored, and appropriate actions would be taken. He also addressed the issue of illegal activities, such as those involving market distortion under the guise of Franco Valota and the gold trade, which are disguised as legitimate businesses.
Furthermore, Abiy Ahmed explained that Ethiopian black-market dollars and gold are being smuggled overseas through various means, highlighting the urgency of stopping such illicit actions.
In conclusion, the Prime Minister stressed that although some nations might think they have the right to exploit Ethiopia, If Ethiopia raises a question in terms of its national interest, will encounter firm resistance.
