Tigray political parties have requested that the US State Department correct its statement regarding displaced persons returning to their homes.

On the second anniversary of the Pretoria Agreement, the US State Department issued a statement that overlooked the struggles of displaced individuals in Tigray. This statement was met with criticism from the Salsay Weyane Tigray and the Tigray Independence Parties.

Both political parties emphasized that the displaced individuals have not been able to return to their homes and are facing serious challenges in temporary shelters.

Salsay Weyane Tigray stated in its written response that the repatriation program for displaced persons has not been effectively implemented, and invading forces continue to commit atrocities in various zones of Tigray. Salsay weyane Tigray stated on its statement ‘’ The U.S. State Department has commended the implementation of the peace agreement as a significant advancement, yet the situation on the ground narrates a contrasting tale.’’

The Tigray Independence Party also expressed concerns in a letter to US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken, stating that displaced individuals in various areas of Tigray, particularly from the western, northwestern, and southern territories of Tigray, remain unable to return to their homes and continue to face challenges in their current living conditions.

The political parties have urged the US State Department to acknowledge this information and amend their statement accordingly. Additionally, they have urged the international community to exert pressure to mitigate the suffering of millions of displaced Tigrayans.
