Eritrean President Isaias Afwerki appeared on his government’s television channel yesterday and gave an interview on current affairs. The president spoke about the agreement signed by Somalia, Egypt, and Eritrea, the situation in Ethiopia, especially in the Tigray region, and the new US President Donald Trump.
President Isaias also commented on the civil war in Sudan. He stated that the rebellion in Sudan in 2019 was caused by a combination of religious agendas and the intervention of foreign forces. The president stated that the Sudanese conflict will be resolved by the Sudanese people themselves, but due to the historical relationship between Eritrea and Sudan, he emphasized the importance of ensuring a safe and stable region.
president Isaias stated to resolve the conflict in Sudan, Eritrea was presented a “non-controversial and widely accepted” peace framework in 2022. President Isaias also stated that the war should not have started, but it continued due to the intervention of foreign forces he spoke. The Eritrean president called for an immediate end to the civil conflict in Sudan.
Regarding the trilateral agreement between Eritrea, Egypt, and Somalia, President Isaias condemned the misinformation and campaign spread by foreign forces and their supporters in the media and on social media. He said that ”this will worsen the conflict in the region and the agreement between the three countries aims mainly to establish stability in the region.”
President Isaias emphasized that Eritrea’s main interest is to have stability and cooperation throughout the Horn of Africa, the Nile Basin, and the neighboring countries of the Red Sea.
In regard to Ethiopia, President Isaias Afwerki expressed that the current conflict in Ethiopia and its disputes with neighboring countries stem from the Ethiopian constitution implemented in 1994. He stated that the constitution does not promote nation-building and if Ethiopia does not make peace internally, it will not contribute positively to the stability, cooperation, and tolerance needed in the region. He also pointed out that the Ethio-Eritrean war and the tension between the two countries over the past 20 years was a result of this policy.
Meanwhile, it is remembered that President Isaias was a key leader and coordinator in the Tigray genocidal war. His alliance with the Ethiopian government was ceased following the conclusion of the genocidal war by the Pretoria agreement. Subsequently, service providers that facilitated connections between the two nations, such as Ethiopian Airlines and telecommunications, ceased their operations.
Additionally, the Eritrean army has been committed numerous crimes in Tigray, including horrific massacres, property looting, and rape, in collaboration with the Ethiopian government. These crimes have been confirmed by international human rights organizations and mainstream media outlets such as the BBC, CNN, and the Associated Press, and the army still occupies Tigray territories.
However, the Eritrean president pretended in his yesterday interview like he cares about the unity of Ethiopia.
