Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan is planning to visit Ethiopia and Somalia in the first two months of 2025, following the Ankara agreement signed last week between the two countries on December 11, 2024, as reported by Anadolu news agency.
During a speech in the eastern city of Erzurum, Erdoğan explained that the agreement was reached after a seven-hour meeting. He stated, “Thanks to their cooperation, we were able to sign the agreement and complete the work.”
Erdoğan further mentioned that he informed both leaders that, if permitted by God, he intends to visit Ethiopia and Somalia in the initial two months of the upcoming year.
Reportedly, the agreement, which was reached by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, and Somali President Hasan Sheikh Mohamed, confirms their commitment to respect each other’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
The agreement emphasizes the federal territorial unity of Somalia, grants Ethiopia access to the sea gate, and recognizes the benefits it will receive. The leaders have also reportedly agreed to set aside their differences and contentious issues.
Erdogan mentioned his strong bond with Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed and stated that he facilitated the conversation. He also mentioned ongoing investment projects in Somalia, as well as efforts to combat terrorism in the region. Erdogan emphasized that the Ankara agreement will offer economic and defense support to Ethiopia.
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s significant role in mediating the talks was recognized, with both leaders expressing appreciation for Turkey’s continual assistance in implementing the agreement and resolving future conflicts through dialogue.
Tensions in the region have escalated following Ethiopia’s signing of the Sea Gate agreement with Somaliland, which was viewed as a breach of Somalia’s territorial integrity. This development has further strained relations between the parties.
The Ankara agreement is seen as a crucial step towards fostering stability and economic collaboration in the Horn of Africa.
Various international organizations and countries, such as the United States, United Kingdom, and African Union, have voiced support for the Ankara agreement signed by Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed and Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud.
