Lt. Gen. Tadese Werede has warned that it would have disastrous consequences to render Tigray government less by weakening the interim administration. He emphasized that strengthening the interim administration is crucial and non-negotiable.
As a 50-year-old political party that signed the Pretoria Peace Agreement, TPLF must be supported and strengthened, according to Lt. Gen. Tadese Werede, who serves as Vice President of the Tigray Interim Administration and Head of the Peace and Security Secretariat.
In a statement to regional journalists on January 5, 2025, Lt. Gen. Tadese discussed about the discussions held by the interim administration with top officials in the region, zone and district leaders, as well as top commanders of the Tigray security forces.
The Vice President stressed the importance of resolving disputes within the TPLF leadership through de-escalation and finding a political solution. Lt. Gen. Tadese also emphasized that tensions between top TPLF leaders should only be addressed through political means, and declared that societal pressure is necessary to halt tensions within the party.
Lt. Gen. Tadese stated that the leadership differences within the TPLF have accumulated over many years, not just recently. He mentioned that discussions have been held with various parties in an attempt to resolve these issues, with a focus on efforts made by the top security leadership in Tigray.
Lt. Gen. Tadese emphasized that the problem at hand is between Tigrayans and should be resolved internally. He expressed that while efforts have been made to consider the interests of the region’s inhabitants, it has been continued with a lack of success thus far.
Stating that the root of the issue lies in differences within the top leadership, Lt. Gen. Tadese warned against attempting to solve problems through the use of force. He stressed that a political solution is necessary, as further violence will not provide resolution.
He also stated that after discussions with security leaders, it was concluded that a political solution is the only viable path forward. Lt. Gen. Tadese urged all parties involved to refrain from resorting to force and instead focus on working towards unity and the national interests of Tigray.
