The Patriarch of the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewehdo Church, His Holiness Abune Mathias, has urged for the resolution of the conflict between the administrators in the Tigray region and the restoration of peace for the restless population. The Patriarch also stated that the conflicts in Oromia and Amhara regions, as well as the warfare in various parts of the country, must be halted to allow the residents to attain peace.

In the peace call issued by the Patriarch yesterday, he defined peace as the state of living harmoniously, achieving goals, and eventually passing away with tranquility. He emphasized, “Peace is essential for procreation, nurturing, marriage, and accompanying one’s Lord in eternal glory.”

“Until now, the value of many things has been recognized, yet the true essence of peace remains unknown,” highlighted His Holiness Abune Mathias. He also stated that peace entails eradicating conflict, fostering compassion in the heart, and prioritizing others’ well-being over one’s own.

“Thousands of peace agreements have been signed worldwide. However, due to human fallibility and tendencies towards violence, peace agreements are often violated, resulting in renewed violence even before the ink dries,” the Patriarch stated.

Therefore, we are calling for an end to the wars in various regions of our country so that our children can live in peace. The patriarch also stated that we once again urge for an end to the war and the establishment of peace for the residents of Oromia and Amhara regions, who are suffering from the conflict and are unable to voice their pain.

The patriarch further mentioned that the disagreement among the administrators in the Tigray region is causing further problems and stress for the people, and expressed hope that everyone can work towards helping those who have lost their peace to find calmness with humility.

The patriarch urged to the religious leaders in the Tigray region, acknowledging, “We understand that you have suffered injustices, and it is only right for you to mourn, as we were unable to stand with you during your time of sorrow.” He then urged, “The cross we carry is a symbol of peace, so let us all prepare our hearts for peace and unity.”

Lastly, he conveyed the church’s solidarity with children affected by the recent earthquake and assured them that they are in the thoughts and prayers of the church. He encouraged all Ethiopians to support those in vulnerable areas to the best of their abilities.

Meanwhile, the Ethiopian Orthodox Church had participated in a genocidal war against the people of Tigray. When the patriarch called for an end to the violence and killings by the government, the members of the church synod rejected his statement and expressed their support for the government’s actions through propaganda and financial contributions.

Furthermore, in response to pressure from the American government to halt the war, members of the Church’s Synod paid a visit to the White House to request America to cease its efforts to stop the genocidal war. It is also noted that, in addition to their propaganda and financial assistance, members of the Church have been seen blessing the cannons of the Ethiopian National Defense Force on the frontlines of the war.
