A peaceful demonstration led by the Tsilal Civil Society of West Tigray, involving displaced people from the western Tigray and others, is taking place in Mekele City. The evacuees have been living in a refugee shelter for 1,630 days, enduring extreme suffering and even death. This peaceful demonstration has been ongoing for two consecutive days, starting from October 13, 2025, and continues today.
The IDPs are now calling for an end to their suffering, which has persisted for five summers. They demand the implementation of the Pretoria Agreement and the return of the IDPs in Tigray and Sudan to their villages. With slogans like “Enough of the suffering we have gone through so far” and “Bring us back to our home,” they have been raising their voices continuously day and night.
Tsilal Civil Society of West Tigray, the civil society organization that organized the peaceful demonstration under the slogan “Enough is Enough,” announced that its main objective is to create awareness of the dire problems faced by displaced people.
It has been stated that the peaceful demonstration, which started in Romanat Square in Mekele City, is part of the “Enough is Enough” movement that is planned to be held at an international level. The IDPs expressed their concerns in various ways, with messages such as “Bring us back to our home,” “Enough of living in Kenda shelter,” and “Attention to the refugees in Sudan.” Ato Tsegay Tetmke, the head of Tsilal West Tigray Civil Society, stated, “We had hoped that the displaced people would return to their homes following the Pretoria Peace Agreement, but our suffering continues.”
“The demonstration aims to highlight the fact that people are dying of hunger and lack of assistance, drawing attention to the dire conditions in the camps,” he added. “The participants of the demonstration demanded the immediate implementation of the Pretoria Peace Agreement, urging leaders to stop their political games and fulfill the agreement.”
The leaders of Tsilal Civil Society of West Tigray emphasized that the primary agenda in Tigray should be the return of displaced persons to their villages. They called on the entire Tigray community, political organizations, youth, religious institutions, and the Tigray diaspora to prioritize the agenda of returning displaced persons to save them from death and massacre.
In addition, the interim administration’s statement pointed out that the Pretoria Peace Agreement “failed to unify the people of Tigray due to improper implementation of its basic provisions.” According to the agreement, armed forces other than the Ethiopian Defense Forces should withdraw from Tigray’s lands, displaced residents should return to their villages, constitutional unity of Tigray should be restored, and accountability and negotiation to settle differences should be implemented. However, these essential conditions have not been fulfilled, the statement said.
“Our people under various forces are still suffering greatly, and our displaced people are living in inhumane conditions because they cannot return to their homes,” the statement continued. “Contrary to the spirit of the agreement, the constitutional unity of Tigray is at risk.”
The interim administration urged the federal government to “liberate our people who are suffering under various forces” and to implement the main issues of the Pretoria Agreement that have not yet been realized. It also called on the federal government to ensure that displaced residents of the region return to their homes, uphold the constitutional territorial unity of Tigray, and fulfill its legal and moral responsibility by establishing accountability.
Additionally, the TPLF announced on its Facebook page two days ago that it is convening a Central Committee meeting to discuss a range of issues and make decisions.
