His Holiness Abune Matias, the patriarch of the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church, addressed separate letters to TPLF chairman Dr. Debretsion G/Michael and interim president Getachew Reda. He expressed concern that the disagreements among the top leaders of the TPLF are jeopardizing the glimmer of peace that has been found in the region.

“The situation is deteriorating over time. It is heading towards a state that could destroy the peace that has been achieved. Seeing this, I am compelled to write this letter of advice, as remaining silent would make us accountable before both people and the Creator.” His Holiness stated.

Abune Matias emphasized in his letter that his efforts to meet with the two leaders in person and discuss the issues were unsuccessful, prompting him to write the letter.

He stated, “The situation is worsening over time; your differences are widening, unconventional approaches are becoming common, formal discussions are lacking, and it is evolving into disharmony. Therefore, I am compelled to write this letter as I cannot rest my conscience.”

His Holiness Abune Matias also highlighted the suffering endured by the people of Tigray during the war, referencing “massacres, hunger, and displacement.” He hoped that the Pretoria agreement would help the people of the region, who survived the war, return to normal life.

“We expected that you, as senior leaders, would resolve this through discussion,” he added. “Your divisions have shocked not only the people of Tigray but also the rest of the world.” The patriarch expressed regret that the leaders had not been successful in resolving their issues through discussion.

The patriarch expressed his sorrow, questioning how, when the people of Tigray faced numerous challenges, the leaders could forget their people and adopt such irresponsible approaches. “Is this the compensation for this people?” he asked.

He pointed out that no one is happy with the complex problem arising from attitudes of ‘I know best’ or ‘only my way is the right path,’ which are creating unnecessary problems.

The patriarch further expressed his concern that leadership divisions are spreading to the wider population, which had previously stood united. “If your goal is to serve the people, your current approach is harmful,” he said, urging the leaders to “think calmly for your people’s sake and act responsibly.”

“If you do not do this, the path you are on will destroy everyone and disturb the peace that has been achieved. I entrust you to heed the advice of your people and address their concerns.”
