Ethiopian Red Cross Society Launches First Humanitarian School Program.

The Ethiopian Red Cross Society has conducted its inaugural program for the first humanitarian school in Ethiopia. the school aims to “build a just, peaceful, and inclusive society” and “create a generation of committed leaders based on innovation, research, and education,” according to the program’s mission statement.

During the launch event, Abera Tola, the President of the Ethiopian Red Cross Association, shared his reflections on the devastation following the war in Tigray two years ago. He remarked, “This school is a memorial to the victims of war.”

“This initiative is part of our effort to teach future generations to respect humanity and the dignity of individuals,” he added, emphasizing that “Based on our culture, we teach Ethiopians humanity through the lens of wisdom.”

He also noted, “We can comfort the hearts that have been hurt, and through education, we can prevent inhumane crimes or cruel acts from occurring in the future.”

Mrs. Lomi Bedo, the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, said, “The initiative was born out of the destruction caused by the war.” She expressed hope that the school’s mission to teach the values of peace and tolerance would help build a better future. “I hope that this will enable us to have a better future,” she stated.

She also emphasized the importance of raising children to not only be leaders but also advocates for humanity. She extended her gratitude to everyone who contributed to the realization of the school.

Bruce Biber, the representative of the International Committee of the Red Cross in Ethiopia, confirmed that they would continue to strengthen their cooperation and support for the school.

Dr. Asha Mohamed, the representative of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) in the African Union, highlighted that the institution is a valuable resource for Ethiopians. “We can achieve our goal by investing in humanitarian education,” he said, noting that active participation is essential for the institution’s success.

The Ethiopian Red Cross Society has been conducting research in collaboration with various universities and institutions to establish the humanitarian school.

The humanitarian school, located in the Saris Adey Ababa neighborhood of Addis Ababa, has completed the necessary preparations for its opening. The education is structured into two semesters and will be completed in one year.

Currently, nine types of educational programs have been prepared, and it has been emphasized that the teachers are individuals who embody Ethiopian values and understand humanity, as reported by Addis Standard.
