Press Release from Salsay Weyane Tigray.
Tigrayan IDPs and Refugees Face Catastrophic Humanitarian Crisis.
The humanitarian situation for Tigrayan internally displaced persons (IDPs) and refugees continues to deteriorate dramatically. Existing humanitarian aid has consistently fallen short of meeting the needs of hundreds of thousands of victims of ethnic cleansing.
The recent news of the US administration’s decision to suspend USAID funds is a devastating blow. Fund suspension of USAID, a pioneering humanitarian organization with its partners actively involved in relief efforts in Tigray, has generated widespread fear of an imminent and even greater humanitarian catastrophe, not only for IDPs but also for other vulnerable Tigrayan communities.
We believe that the only viable and long-term solution to the plight of our IDPs and refugees is their swift and safe return to their homes, currently occupied by invading forces. Preventing an apocalyptic humanitarian crisis requires immediate action.
Therefore, we urgently reiterate our call to all relevant bodies and humanitarian organizations to intervene and avert this impending disaster. We implore them to exert maximum pressure on the Ethiopian government to fulfill its obligations: the immediate and unconditional withdrawal of all occupying forces from Tigray, the facilitation of the safe return of IDPs and refugees to their homes, and a significant and immediate scaling up of humanitarian aid.
