February 13 marks the anniversary of the Apology to the Stolen Generations by former Prime Minister Kevin Rudd, for the forcible removal of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children from their families, communities and Country, and the trauma, grief and suffering caused as a result of past Government policies, laws and practices.
It’s been 17 years since the Apology and almost 28 years since the Bringing them Home report, that The Healing Foundation reveals only 6% of recommendations have been implemented, 54% have failed to be implemented, 11 have qualified as pass, 10 classified as a partial failure, 10 unclear and one is no longer applicable. As part of the National Package for Stolen Generations survivors, The Healing Foundation report makes 19 recommendations across areas on reparations, rehabilitation and research, records, family tracing and reunions, acknowledgements and apologies, education and training, and monitoring and accountability.
Southern Cross University Indigenous Events Coordinating Committee (SCUIECC) invites you to visit each campus Library display about the National Apology, and access further books and resources so we can learn and share stories about Australia’s history and continue the journey of healing.
Today the Prime Minister, the Hon Anthony Albanese addresses members from the Stolen Generations at Parliament House on the Anniversary of the Apology to the Stolen Generations.
