A fire broke out at the Tenedba refugee camp in Sudan on the night of April 17, 2025, causing extensive destruction. The camp shelters Tigrayan refugees who fled from western Tigray due to the genocidal war waged by the Ethiopian government and its allies—the Eritrean Army and Amhara special forces.

While the exact cause of the fire remains unknown, victims and camp coordinators stated that it severely damaged property, destroying numerous homes. Fortunately, there have been no reports of deaths or injuries.

Dmtsi Weyane Television reported that the fire erupted during the night, making it difficult for refugees to respond swiftly. As a result, many were left without temporary shelter and essential supplies, including food.

The affected refugees have urgently appealed for humanitarian assistance, stressing the dire circumstances caused by the loss of critical resources.

This incident follows a similar devastating fire at the Um Rakuba Tigrayan refugee camp in Sudan, which claimed the lives of two children—a six-year-old and a two-year-old—and caused significant damage to property and livelihoods.

These Tigrayan refugees fled to Sudan to escape atrocities committed by the Ethiopian government and its allies—the Amhara forces and the Eritrean army—during the genocidal war launched under the guise of a law enforcement campaign against the people of Tigray in late 2020. Although the Pretoria Agreement officially ended the conflict, the Ethiopian federal government has yet to fulfill its obligations to repatriate refugees as stipulated in the agreement. Consequently, many refugees continue to live in dire conditions, with over one million displaced persons still scattered across Tigray.
