Over the past three months, eight displaced individuals residing in the Axum IDP center have died due to hunger and a lack of medical supplies, according to Kahsay Asayehegn, the coordinator of the Axum cluster for displaced people from the West Tigray zone.
Coordinator Kahsay Asayehegn also noted that the displaced population faces a heightened risk of flooding due to heavy rains in the area, worsening their suffering as they endure cold and illness.
The displaced individuals have appealed to the relevant authorities to urgently provide a solution, asking for both humanitarian assistance and the opportunity to return to their villages to escape the worsening crisis. They also urged officials to ensure safe shelter before the onset of summer.
According to reports from Tigray Television, the prolonged displacement has led to severe consequences. The failure to implement agreements allowing the displaced to return to their homes has resulted in increased illegal migration among the youth, while children and the elderly continue to succumb to hunger and disease. Displaced individuals have repeatedly called on the government and other relevant authorities to take swift action.
In related news, emergency workers in the Amhara region have reported that the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) has suspended humanitarian aid for displaced people and other vulnerable groups, according to information obtained from Deutsche Welle.
The report highlights that since the new U.S. administration took office, USAID has significantly reduced its assistance, with aid being entirely discontinued in some areas, including Tigray. This decision has had a devastating impact on displaced populations relying on humanitarian support.
Displaced individuals in affected regions have expressed their distress over the deteriorating conditions, citing a severe shortage of food and basic necessities. They report that shelter tents have been destroyed, medical professionals have left, and essential supplies—such as flour, oil, and clothing—are no longer being provided.
With no official response from authorities, displaced communities continue to struggle for survival amid worsening humanitarian conditions.
