Protests will take place next week in the regional capital, Mekele, and in Geneva, Switzerland, under the slogan “Enough of spending the fifth summer in a shelter.” The demonstrations aim to raise awareness and advocate for the displaced residents of the Tigray region, who have been living in temporary shelters across various cities. Organizers seek to facilitate their return home and ensure lasting solutions for those affected.
Scheduled to take place from June 18 to 20, 2025, the protests seek to draw attention to the plight of those displaced by the war and living in shelters and refugee camps. According to information from Tslal, a civil society organization dedicated to advocating for displaced people from western Tigray, the primary goal is to ensure their return home before the next summer.
The protest, organized by Tslal, a civil society group advocating for displaced people, is described as special and designed to create an impact. Organizers have urged the public to participate and support its success.
Furthermore, the coordinators emphasized that the main objective is to influence the parties involved in the Pretoria Agreement—including its signatories and stakeholders, particularly the federal government and the international community.
In a statement, the civil society organization urged all friends of the region to attend this historic joint peaceful demonstration and be the voice of displaced people, both at home and abroad. They emphasized that the concern for displaced people is shared by both the region and its friends.
Meanwhile, a recent report by the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) estimates that nearly one million internally displaced people remain in the Tigray region. The agency noted in its annual report that humanitarian assistance continues to be the primary source of livelihood for those IDPs.
