Internally displaced persons (IDPs) from Western Tigray staged a peaceful demonstration in Mekelle today, rallying under the slogan “Enough Spending Five Rainy Seasons in Tents.” Their message is clear: they demand a swift and safe return to their homes.
The demonstration, organized by the Tselal Civil Society of Western Tigray (TCSWT), aims to raise awareness of the ongoing hardships and suffering endured by displaced persons. Organizers are calling on the international community, the Ethiopian government, and stakeholders of the Pretoria Agreement to take immediate action.
The protest is currently taking place in Romanat Square, Mekelle, and will continue for the next three days. The demonstration in Geneva is also underway, running concurrently with the protest in Mekelle. Demonstrators aim to draw international attention to their plight and press for a resolution before the upcoming rainy season.
Dr. Muez Berhe, Deputy Chairman of TCSWT, emphasized that the issue of displacement affects all Tigrayans and supporters of Tigray. “Everyone should be a voice for this oppressed community,” he stated.
