The World Health Organization (WHO) has launched an emergency response to a suspected outbreak of viral haemorrhagic fever (VHF) in Ethiopia’s Southern Region, following reports of eight infections, including among healthcare workers.
The announcement was made earlier today by WHO Director-General #Dr._Tedros _Adhanom Ghebreyesus via his official Facebook page. He confirmed that WHO is working in close coordination with Ethiopia’s Ministry of Health, the Ethiopian Public Health Institute, and regional health authorities to contain the outbreak.
“WHO has deployed experts to the affected towns, along with medicines and other materials to support care for people in need, and personal protective equipment for health workers,” Dr. Tedros stated.
Samples from the suspected cases have been sent for laboratory testing, and WHO is supporting contact tracing efforts in the affected communities. Further details on the nature of the virus are expected soon.
To bolster the immediate response, Dr. Tedros announced the release of US$300,000 from the WHO Contingency Fund for Emergencies. He also emphasized the importance of regional cooperation, noting that WHO offices in Ethiopia and South Sudan are working together to prevent potential cross-border transmission.
“I commend Ethiopian health authorities for their timely sharing of information and quick response and offer WHO’s full support,” he added.
The situation remains under close observation as health officials await test results and continue containment efforts.
