Eritrean and Ethiopian Forces Accused of Atrocities in Tigray, Genocide Watch Reports.
Genocide Watch has released a report stating that Eritrean forces are involved in ongoing crimes against humanity in Ethiopia’s Tigray region, despite a formal peace agreement signed in 2022.
The report, authored by Grace Harris, highlights Eritrea’s continued military presence in Tigray and its role in the genocide that claimed an estimated 600,000 lives. Genocide Watch asserts that Eritrean troops have committed widespread atrocities, including systemic rape, sexual violence, civilian massacres, and arbitrary detentions.
Although Eritrea was not a signatory to the 2022 peace agreement between the Ethiopian government and the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF), its forces remain active in the region. Their continued presence is described as a major point of contention in Ethiopia today.
The report also criticizes the Ethiopian government for its complicity in the genocide, noting that both nations should be held accountable. Genocide Watch calls for a case to be brought before the International Court of Justice (ICJ) to try Ethiopia and Eritrea for genocide in Tigray.
Key Findings from the Report:
– Eritrean forces played a central role in the Tigrayan genocide.
– Atrocities include systemic sexual violence, mass killings, and unlawful detentions.
– Eritrea has refused to withdraw its troops from Tigray, despite international pressure.
– Genocide Watch recommends immediate legal action and troop withdrawal.
As the international community grapples with the implications of these findings, Genocide Watch urges swift action to prevent further suffering and to hold perpetrators accountable.
