Sudan’s Al-Burhan Meets Eritrean President Afwerki in Port Sudan

— Sudan’s Sovereign Council Chairman, Gen. Abdul Fattah Al-Burhan, met with Eritrean President Isaias Afwerki in the eastern city of Port Sudan on Saturday to discuss strengthening bilateral relations and enhancing political and security cooperation between the two countries.

According to the Sudanese News Agency (SUNA), the two leaders held talks on regional issues and ways to support stability in the Horn of Africa. They also explored opportunities to expand cooperation in security, economic, and trade fields.

The meeting reviewed the latest developments in Sudan, where fighting continues between the Sudanese Army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), led by Mohammed Hamdan Dagalo, known as Hemeti. Discussions focused on efforts to restore peace and reinforce regional security, SUNA reported.

Al-Burhan emphasized Sudan’s commitment to deepening strategic ties with Eritrea and expressed appreciation for Asmara’s support of Sudan’s unity and stability. He stressed that his government remains dedicated to advancing cooperation across all sectors and voiced hope for stronger collaboration that would serve the interests of both peoples and bolster regional security.

President Isaias Afwerki reiterated Eritrea’s backing for Sudan’s unity and stability, stressing his country’s firm opposition to any foreign involvement in Sudan’s domestic affairs. He underscored that “Sudan’s stability is a prerequisite for regional stability,” Afwerki said.
