Salsay Weyane Tigray Condemns Salary Exclusion of Civil Servants
The political party Salsay Weyane Tigray has issued a press release denouncing what it describes as discriminatory actions by the Ethiopian government against Tigrayan civil servants.
According to the statement, the government continues to conflate the people of Tigray with the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF), a narrative the party says has fueled collective punishment. Ethiopian government officials, both civil and military, have allegedly reinforced this rhetoric, leading to punitive measures that “alienate and antagonize” the population.
Most recently, Tigrayan civil servants were excluded from a nationwide salary increment introduced in September. The party highlighted that this follows the government’s earlier refusal to release salaries owed during the 2020–2022 Tigray war. “Punishing an entire population constitutes a grave and unlawful practice,” the press release stated.
Salsay Weyane Tigray argued that such actions persist because the government has not faced sufficient pressure to honor its constitutional obligations and commitments under the Pretoria Cessation of Hostilities Agreement.
The party urged human rights organizations to monitor the situation closely, describing the denial of salaries and benefits as a “serious violation of human rights.” It called on stakeholders to exert meaningful pressure on the government to reverse what it termed “arbitrary and discriminatory decisions” and to refrain from targeting the Tigrayan population.
