UN Marks 25th Anniversary of Algiers Agreement, Urges Renewed Commitment to Peace
The United Nations today commemorated the 25th anniversary of the Algiers Agreement, describing it as a landmark peace accord that formally ended the border conflict between Eritrea and Ethiopia.
In a statement, the UN emphasized that the agreement has laid the foundation for peaceful relations between the two nations, underscoring its enduring significance in promoting stability and cooperation in the Horn of Africa.
Delivered by Stéphane Dujarric, Spokesman for the UN Secretary-General, Antonio Gutierres the statement highlighted the enduring significance of the Agreement, which established mechanisms for border demarcation and reaffirmed the principles of sovereignty and territorial integrity for both countries.
> “At this important milestone, the Secretary-General reiterates the steadfast support of the United Nations for the Algiers Agreement,” Dujarric said.
The Secretary-General recalled that seven years ago, the leaders of Eritrea and Ethiopia renewed their commitment to peace through a joint declaration — a move hailed as a testament to the power of dialogue and cooperation.
Yet, against the backdrop of renewed tensions in the region, the Secretary-General urged both nations to recommit to the vision of lasting peace embodied in the Algiers Agreement. He called on Eritrea and Ethiopia to strengthen efforts toward building good neighbourly relations and to continue working with regional and international partners to advance development cooperation for the benefit of their peoples.
