— The Tigray Independence Party (TIP) has issued a stark warning about what it describes as a man-made famine threatening thousands of internally displaced people (IDPs) across the region, particularly those sheltering at the Hitsats camp in Asgede Woreda.
In a statement released yesterday, TIP expressed “profound sorrow and outrage” over the deaths of displaced citizens from Western Tigray, blaming the crisis on neglect and political inaction. The party said repeated reports from governmental and non-governmental organizations have documented starvation-related deaths, yet responsible institutions have failed to respond adequately.
TIP accused authorities of deliberately concealing the scale of the famine from media coverage, denying the world an opportunity to witness the extent of suffering. The party added that displaced Tigrayans and refugees in Sudan are enduring similar levels of deprivation, hunger, and death.
The statement praised individuals and organizations who have worked to expose the crisis, while urging governmental bodies, humanitarian agencies, and international partners to act immediately. TIP stressed that lifesaving assistance must reach those in need without obstruction.
According to TIP, the famine is a direct consequence of the failure to fully implement the Pretoria Agreement, signed to bring peace to the region. The party reiterated its call for all stakeholders and guarantors of the accord to uphold their responsibilities and ensure full implementation without delay.
“The lives of displaced Tigrayans must not continue to be sacrificed due to political inaction and deliberate neglect,” the statement concluded, underscoring the urgency of intervention to prevent further loss of life.
