Starvation Threatens Thousands at Adi Mehameday IDP Camp.
– More than 6,600 internally displaced persons (IDPs) at the Adi Mehameday camp are facing imminent death due to starvation and lack of medical care, according to a report from Tigray Television.
The report revealed that 286 people have already died in the camp as a result of hunger and the absence of essential medical supplies.
The camp currently shelters over 27,000 people who fled Western Tigray during the 2020 devastating war. Of these, 6,600 are in critical condition, suffering from severe hunger, inadequate medical care, and the absence of humanitarian aid. Officials warn that without immediate intervention, the death toll will rise sharply.
Brhane Amare, coordinator of the Adi Mehameday camp, told Tigray Television that since 2023, 282 IDPs have died. He stressed that thousands more urgently require emergency assistance to survive.
Medical services remain extremely limited. Amare noted that the camp lacks a permanent health facility, relying only on a mobile clinic that visits once a week. Hunger, poor shelter conditions, and the absence of consistent medical support have worsened suffering and increased mortality rates.
Most of the displaced are children, mothers, heads of households, and elderly parents. The community is pleading for life-saving aid and urging authorities to create conditions for their safe return home before the crisis escalates further.
