Lieutenant General Tadesse Werede has been officially appointed as the President of the Tigray Interim Administration (TIRA), succeeding Getachew Reda, who served in the role for the past two years.

The appointment of Lieutenant General Tadesse Werede as President of the Tigray Interim Administration was marked by formal, peaceful leadership transition.

Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed shared the development on his social media, emphasizing the significance of the moment, saying, “Today, we have organized a program to carry out the transition of power in a new culture, in an official and peaceful manner.”

Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed also stated that over the past month, extensive discussions have been conducted, guided by the Ethiopian Constitution, the Pretoria Agreement, and input from the diplomatic community. He explained that these deliberations concluded that the interim government should continue as a body tasked with addressing key responsibilities left unfinished at the end of Getachew Reda’s term, in accordance with the law.

The Prime Minister added, “We have been holding discussions to determine who is best suited to lead this transition and bring it to fruition.”

Lieutenant General Tadesse Werede previously served as Vice President and Head of the Peace and Security Secretariat within the Interim Administration established under the Pretoria Peace Agreement. Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed highlighted his qualifications, describing him as someone who deeply understands the challenges and achievements of the administration over the past two years and is well-positioned to lead Tigray into the future.
